DESCRIPTION
Computer vision is an area of artificial intelligence aiming at developing technical systems capable of perceiving the environment through image and video processing and analysis. In this talk, we mainly focus on issues related to the computational visual perception of aspects of human presence, namely the ability of a technical system to estimate the geometry and motion of the human body, to recognize its actions and behavior, or even to evaluate the emotional state and intentions of a human. In this special area, we give specific examples of our research activity and highlight the significant boost achieved due to the exploitation of machine learning techniques and neural networks. We also give examples of applications developed based on these technologies in the field of robotics and smart environments. The presentation concludes with some personal views on the future of this scientific area, as well as on the opportunities and risks posed by the relevant scientific and technological developments.

Prof. Antonis Argyros
Antonis Argyros is a Professor of Computer Science at the Computer Science Department (CSD), University of Crete (UoC) and a researcher at the Institute of Computer Science (ICS), Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH) in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. Antonis received a B.Sc. degree (1989), an M.Sc. degree (1992) and a Ph.D. degree (1996) in Computer Science from CSD-UoC. He has been a postdoctoral fellow at the Computational Vision and Active Perception Laboratory at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden. His current research interests fall in the areas of computer vision and pattern recognition, 3D reconstruction, image motion and tracking, with emphasis on human body pose and shape analysis and on the recognition of human activities and gestures. He is also interested in applications of computer vision in the fields of robotics and smart environments. In these areas, he has published more than 250 papers in scientific journals and refereed conference proceedings, and has delivered more than 60 invited and keynote talks in international events, universities and research centers.
Antonis Argyros has served in the organizing and program committees of several major scientific conferences and workshops as well as in the editorial boards of several scientific journals on computer vision, computer graphics, robotics and related disciplines. Since 1999, Antonis Argyros has been involved in more than 30 European and national RTD projects on computer vision, pattern recognition, image analysis and robotics. He has served as the Chairman of CSD-UoC, Chair of the Interdepartmental Committee of the Brain and Mind interdisciplinary graduate program, Chairman of the Scientific Council of ICS-FORTH, as Deputy Member of the Board of Directors of the European Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) and as a member of its Strategy Task Group. Antonis Argyros is also a founding member of SceneOpsis, a spin-off company of the Institute of Computer Science (ICS-FORTH), that capitalizes on computer vision techniques to effortlessly digitize spaces into immersive experiences.
